Evidence for the Etruscan occupation of Castiglione del Lago comes from the funerary contexts. Etruscan tombs and dating from the Etruscan Orientalizing (the 7th century BCE) to the Hellenistic period (the 4th-2nd century BCE). Many of these tombs are located along the ridge road that runs from Villastrada on the southern end, through Gioiella, to Petrignano on the north, and which would have connected Chiusi to Cortona. Other tombs, especially from the 7th century BCE, have been found along the pass, which runs from the southwestern shore of Trasimeno through Pucciarelli to the ridge road.
