Excavations Continue at Via Belvedere

The excavation of the Via Belvedere site on the south slope of Castiglione del Lago will continue in 2025. The site, which overlooks Lago Trasimeno, was settled in the late first century A.D. as evidenced by an arched terrace wall and adjoining water channel constructed in opus mixtum. Called “Le Buccace” by local residents that feature has always been visible. Excavations in 2023 and 2024, revealed that the Roman terracing extended up the slope and supported a large complex, mostly likely a Villa. Excavations in 2025 will focus on determining the extent of the complex and the management of water by the Romans.
